Car shipping from Atlanta, GA to Savannah, GA
Figures below are worked out for this specific corridor and dated.
Before pickup: why the carrier gives a pickup window, not an hour; how to prepare the car; and what the pickup inspection protects.
Driving cost: 249 mi × 76¢/mi (IRS rate) = $189, a 1-day drive. See the full math.
The route between Atlanta and Savannah
Mostly I-16, with I-75 for the first leg out of Atlanta (about 77 of the 249 miles) before I-16 splits off and carries the rest, roughly 165 miles, into Savannah.
No toll roads on the OSRM route; Georgia's interstates on this corridor are untolled.
What did other companies quote for this trip?
What we were quoted for one running 2020 Toyota RAV4, open carrier, door to door, all-in (companies not named):
- $210: a licensed broker, 2026-09-23. "On the date you want", balance on delivery, deposit not stated. No carrier had confirmed it.
- $550: a licensed broker, 2026-09-23. Includes taxes, tolls, insurance and up to 100 lb of personal items in the car.
- $625: a Georgia carrier with in-state authority, quoting its own trucks, 2026-09-24. All-in for a pickup window of October 12 to 23; no deposit stated.
Plan on the two quotes that agree. A broker at $550 and a carrier quoting its own truck at $625 came in $75 apart for the same 249-mile trip.
Treat the $210 with care. Driving the car yourself costs about $189 at the IRS rate, and a carrier has to cover its own driver, fuel, insurance and the empty run back. A broker figure that barely clears your own driving cost can be the price it posts the job at rather than one a truck has accepted, so it can sit unassigned or come back higher after you have paid a deposit. Ask any company quoting far below the others whether a carrier has accepted that number.
Check any quote, ours included, with the quote checker; quotes on other routes are on car shipping cost, and days on the truck by distance in the transit time estimator.
What can delay a shipment on this lane?
- Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and Savannah is the coastal end of this lane, so a storm aimed at the Georgia coast reaches this trip at the Savannah end first. The next note shows what that has meant on I-16. (National Hurricane Center, read 2026-09-26)
- For a coastal evacuation Georgia can run I-16 one way, westbound on all four lanes, from Savannah to US 441 in Dublin, more than 100 miles. It did this for Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. While contraflow is on, nothing heads toward Savannah on that stretch, so a delivery into Savannah waits or takes another road. (Georgia Department of Public Safety, read 2026-09-26)
